th-9th Grade IB Technology Projects

By following the IB Design Cycle, these 6th-9th grade IB Technology Projects are designed to allow students to delve deeply into one of the Areas of Interaction.  Students work closely in groups of 8-10 to investigate, design, plan, create and reflect on an action project of the group’s choice that is related to one of the following:  Community and Service, Health and Social Education, Environment, and  Approaches to Learning.  These annual projects prepare students for the culminaing IB Personal Project that is required of them during the final year in the MYP.

6th Grade IB Technology Project Focus:  Community and Service

This area of interaction focuses on developing community awareness and a sense of responsibility towards the community so that students become engaged and empowered to act in response to the needs of the community. Students will identify a local community need and develop a solution to meet those needs.  Students complete this as part of their Ancient Civilizations course.

7th Grade IB Technology Project Focus:   Health and Social Education

This area of interaction focuses on both physical and mental wellness. Students identify an issue related to health and social education within the community and create a plan to publicize the services that are available locally to those in need. Students complete this project as part of their World History class.

8th Grade IB Technology Project Focus:  Environment

This area of interaction focuses on understanding the world around us, our responsibility to the environment, and how we can improve the area we are in for ourselves and others. Students identify an area at Blair where they could improve their school environment and create a plan to “spruce up” part of the campus. Students complete this project as part of their U.S. History class.

9th Grade IB Technology Project Focus:  Approaches to Learning

This area of interaction focuses on understanding how we learn best and what skills are necessary to succeed in all subjects at school. Students identify important learning skills they struggled with when they were in 7th and 8th grade. The students then prepare a presentation to give to 7th and 8th grade classes, teaching the students how to master the approaches to learning skill they have chosen.  Students complete this project as part of their English class.

 10th Grade IB Personal Project

The 10th grade Personal Project is completed during the final year of the MYP.  It is the culminating project students complete to earn the IB Middle Years Programme certificate. The Personal Project is related to the areas of interaction and is solely based on the students’ personal interests.  There are three components to this project:  1) the project itself; 2)  a five page paper explaining the process, how it relates to the areas of interaction, and a reflection piece; and 3)  an oral presentation.  While the project itself is completed outside of the school day, the other components of the Personal Project are completed in their World History class.  Student projects in the past have included documenting oral histories, creating a board game, teaching ukelele, filming a skateboarding video, writing a self-help book for teens, creating original pieces of art, and many more.
